Students can participate in any of the school’s four magnet tracks. One of the magnet tracks is the School of Performing Arts, which offers courses in musical theater, drama, chorus, dance, orchestra, and band. Students also have an opportunity to explore their artistic side in the visual arts program offered at McNair. Daily dance classes, exploring the genres of jazz, ballet, tap, modern, hip-hop and musical theatre style dancing, are offered in our new dance studio with sprung wood floor and mirrors. To augment their learning, student dancers are also encouraged to audition for the McNair Performing Dance Company. In Drama classes, students learn acting technique, different styles of acting and how to write their own sketches. Musical Theater students perform in the year-end spring musical or may choose to participate behind the scenes with recently-purchased theatrical equipment such as costumes, show bills, instruments, trusses and lighting. Piano/Keyboarding, band and orchestra also form the performing arts program. Students in orchestra receive expert instruction from a strings consultant who visits weekly.

McNair is very proud and excited to open up its brand new, technologically advanced performing arts building. Come share our amazement as we kick of the 2007 - 2008 performance schedule with "School House Rock Jr."

At McNair we bring in professional artists several times a year to expose our students to a variety of the arts.

Band and Orchestra

Paul A. Dewberry
Band, Orchestra, and Piano/Keyboarding
Band classes are divided into two levels at McNair.
Beginning Band is for students who have never played an instrument or want to change to another instrument.

Band students who have completed the basics of an instrument will be permitted to enroll in the Advanced Band. Advanced Band meets daily and will perform many times during the school year. Performances include a pep rally, school functions, home basketball games, Holiday Parade, and various community functions. There are also several opportunities for Advanced Band Members to audition for special performance bands, All County, All State, BYSO, and various community groups.

Orchestra Class is reserved for those students who were recommended to continue Orchestra or a String Class from the Elementary Schools. Orchestra, like Advanced Band, will meet everyday to prepare as a performing group. We have a part-time string consultant, Kelly Gallman, who will assist in Orchestra and with performances.

Performances include school functions, holiday performances, and some community events. There are also several opportunities for Orchestra students to audition for "special performance orchestras" including All County, All State, and Brevard Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Musical Theater, Drama, and Chorus

Lisa Hill
Musical Theater, Drama, and Chorus

In a very interactive classroom setting, students learn acting technique, different styles of acting, and how to write their own sketches. The students perform in school plays and do scenes for the drama festival. Auditions and rehearsals are held after school - a good time for the students to put to use all of the classroom technique they learn daily.

Dance

Cassie Howley
Dance
Students receive technical instruction in jazz, ballet, tap, modern, hip-hop, and musical theatre style dancing. While not every genre of dance is for everyone, McNair tries to explore all aspects of dance so that we can better equip students to go out into the community and use their talents. Guest artists are brought in to assist in better equipping the students in their technique. Dance history and vocabulary is also used to teach the students about the world of dance.

All of our dance students have the honor of working with our professional dance consultant, Marty Eyster, Vice-President Artistic Director of Precision Contemporary Dance Company. Ms. Eyster works with the dancers approximately once a week in our brand new dance studio, fully equipped with sprung wood floors and wall to wall mirrors.

Visual Arts

Wade Ross
Fine Arts Teacher
321-633-3630 ext.5952

This year your child will be learning the principles of two-dimensional and three-dimensional design as well as creating their own original works of art. In addition to classic drawing, painting, and sculpture I will be integrating some of the cultural arts from Central and South America, as well as Mediterranean. The art classes are also going to be involved in school drama productions and community activities by helping design, decorate, and paint props and sets for various functions. It is my hope for your child to understand the value of arts within the community, cultures, and be able to tie these ideas in to real world possibilities.

The art room needs supplies. If you have any of these regular household items, it would be appreciated if you would send these in with your child.
Empty egg cartons
Plastic yogurt cups, with lids
Large plastic cups
(the kind that restaurants give away)
Any embellishments: beads, feathers, scraps of fabric, sequins and yarn
Magazines
Used button down shirts (to protect clothing)
Plastic microwave dinner trays
Matte board

Please feel free to contact me with any questions regarding our fine arts program or if you are in the art profession, and would like to volunteer your time to speak with some of my classes.
